Serena is a prominent figure in the high end society of New York's Upper East Side and is one of the few to attend the most elite of education institutions. Tall and blonde, Blake is spontaneous girl who aspires to be an actress and model. She is the best friend of Blair Waldorf, however, the two have a very tumultuous relationship. Gossip Girl follows the lives of Serena and her socialite friends as they deal with sex, drugs and other teenage issues in their untouchable circle of glamour.

Chace Crawford as Nate Archibald

Nate is a wealthy lacrosse player born to a socialite mother and a former Navy captain. He is much into drugs and dating women, such as Jenny Humphrey, Serene van der Woodsen and Georgina Spark, however his only serious relationship was with his on again/off again girlfriend Blair Waldorf, Serena's best friend. Gossip Girl follows a group of elite school teens as they deal with teenage issues such as sex, drugs and relationships through the eyes of the mysterious Gossip Girl.

Erik van der Woodsen

Erik van der Woodsen is the little brother of serena van der woodsen, and is said to have to have his fair share of trouble making skills. He has a dark past, that is still haunting him: he tried to commit sucide. Erik is very close to his big sister.

Leighteen Meester as Blair Waldorf

Short brunette Blair is Serena's rival for the title as the prettiest and most popular girl in Constance Billiard School. She is an intense girl who knows what she wants and is willing to do anything to get it. Her parents are divorces, as her mother is a wealthy socialite and her father, who turned out to be gay, lives in France. Blair has a turbulent relationship with Nate, her boyfriend whom she plans to marry in the future. Aside from that, she also intends to get into Yale University after high school.

Ed Westwick as Chuck Bass

Chuck is a rich, arrogant man who desires the finer things in life such as luxury, alcohol and sex. He is obnoxious as he is rich, and everyone despises him, although they let it go for he always throws the best parties in the Upper East Side of New York City. Chuck has come close to sexual encounters with Jenny and Serena, however no one really knows what his sexual orientation really is.

Vanessa Abrams

Dan's (Penn Badgley) childhood best friend who moved away from home, but who's come back to New York all grown up and sporting a major crush on her BFF. Unfortunately, her timing kinda-sorta sucks since she shows up just as Dan is falling head over heels for Serena (Blake Lively).

Kati Farkas and Isabel Coates

17 years old, Katy and Isabel are inseparable, members of Blair's social circle who are Rosencrantz and Guildenstern in Jimmy Choos." Rufus Humphrey

Late 30s/40. Charming, post-punk father of DAN and JENNY. Front man for a band that had some success in the 90s and still plays to a loyal following, he has his own downtown art gallery. Although his tattoos might make him seem an unlikely voice of reason, he's got a strong moral center and wants to do right by his kids. Separated from his artist wife, he's surprised when old flame (and former groupie) DARLA comes back into his life. SERIES REGULAR.

As fans of the GG books know, Vanessa is Dan's (Penn Badgley) childhood best friend who moved away from home, but who's come back to New York all grown up and sporting a major crush on her BFF. LOS ANGELES, Calif. (September 13, 2007) – She’s best known for playing Bridget in “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants,” but in a matter of days, actress Blake Lively will be your favorite “Gossip Girl.”

On Wednesday, September 19th, the drama has its season premiere on The CW with 20-year-old Lively starring as Serena van der Woodsen, a troubled, socialite teen.

Serena returns to New York City and her old prep school after a mysterious year away at a boarding school. While she may have left the academy as teen queen bee, she returns to find things tense with her bff – Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester), who is now ruling the roost.

Prepare, New Yorkers, for a "Gossip Girl" promotional onslaught.

The CW teen drama chronicling the life and times of privileged upper East Siders is taking over the city with talking billboards, "It" guides and shiny phone accessories.

This Saturday, if you happen to pass such major tourist spots as Times Square, Union Square, Central Park, Rockefeller Center and the Metropolitan Museum, volunteers will be handing out "Gossip Girl" "It" guides pointing out the hottest places in town to shop, hang or get a stone massage. They'll also be giving out blinged-out "Kiss on the Lips" mirrors for your cell phone. (Kiss on the Lips is the cool-kid party featured in the show's first episode.)

But that's not all.

If you're walking on Seventh Ave. or West Broadway, you might pass a large "Gossip Girl" billboard promoting the six main characters. The billboards feature speakers that play a two-minute audio loop of "Gossip Girl" gossip (voiced by actress Kristen Bell), catching you up on who the infamous "S" and "B" are.

If you have a Bluetooth device, you can even download promotional video clips of the show.

Last but not least, go to Times Square between 6 and 9 p.m. anytime this month and check out the Reuters and Nasdaq news tickers as they scroll info about the show and its characters.

JOSH SCHWARTZ was shooting the finale of "The O.C." in Pasadena last season when he began to get an inkling about the potential of his next project. "All these teenagers from the neighborhood had gathered, upset the show was ending," said Schwartz, the young writer-producer who created the gauzy Newport Beach teen soap. "They said, 'You have to do another show for us.' " In fact, Schwartz told them, he was starting work on a television series based on the popular "Gossip Girl" books.
